Attacking Troop Selection

Attacking is one of the major parts of the game, we all have done it over and over again. I am sure at sometime you have wondered which troops to use with which combination for an attack. You have also probably wondered which Troop to update next. I have too, so I turned to the statistics and this is what I found:

A Table comparing each Troop at each Level. Look at the two columns on the right, this summarizes the whole table, with each tiny graph representing that Units' value to the maximum available for that category.

All troop statistics including effectiveness

Effectiveness Per Attack  :  Damage Per Attack  * Hitpoints
Effectiveness Per Second. : Damage Per Second * Hitpoints
So now you are probably wondering and planning when do these Units become available.

Here is a Chart showing which Troop Level becomes unlocked at a specific Laboratory Level, also Cost and Time is shown. I also added the Town Hall level you will need to unlock that Level of Laboratory:

OK phew that's a lot of info, but lets put the basics aside and get to the juicy part.

If you studied the first Chart you probably could not believe that the Balloon Level 6 are by far the most destructive force. No one really uses the Balloons on the Lower Levels because they tend to die quickly in Battle. But the Balloon L5 & L6 out ranks all the other troops in almost every aspect of Attack.

Lets summarize only the Higher Level Troops and lets split the troops up in rank of Effectiveness Per Attack and Effectiveness Per Second.

Effectiveness Per Attack:
These Troops are great for full out attacks, high damage, usually good when going for Trophies:

Higher Level Troop Stats Effectiveness Per Attack

Here is the same data in a graph, Effectiveness Per Attack:
Higher Level Troops Graph on Effectiveness Per Attack

I would like to point out somethings I have noticed especially for us who do not have max Troops.....yet ;)
  • See how high L4 Balloon scores, not to mention L5 & L6
  • Look at how high a L5 Wizard scores, easy reachable at TH8, but see how little change to L6.
  • Notice the big jump of L1 Pekka to L2 Pekka.
  • L5 Barbarian outscores L5 Giant, although L6 Giant doubles in effectiveness
  • Goblins surprised me the most, L5 making the chart and L6 very high up in the ranks
  • Lastly, in my opinion, do not under estimate the Redhead Valkyrie, wondering how effective she would be on L5? If only they could cut down on her Training time.

Maybe that's an idea for the next Article, our most valuable Resource: TIME. Comparing training times with Effectiveness of troops. Any volunteers?

So lets now look at the faster Troops dishing out damage quicker.....

Effectiveness Per Second:

These Troops are great for quick powerful attacks, usually going for Resources:

Here is the same data in a graph, Effectiveness Per Second:

Higher Level Troops Graph on Effectiveness Per Second
Here are some points I would like to point out:
  • See how high Balloon L5 & L6 are again
  • Look at how high a L5 Wizard scores
  • Notice all the L5 Elixir Troops, Barbarian, and Goblin, cheap and quick to make.
  • Barbarian L5 outscores Giant L6
  • Goblins surprised me the most, again, L5 scoring high and L6 is no.3 !!
  • Also Hogs L5 up there in top 6, no wonder so many players use them and probably why they raised their cost of training in the last Update.

So there you go. All of the available Troops at their specific Levels and Effectiveness.

Please keep in mind the roles of each Troop, like for instance Golems, is not a great attacker but a wonderful meat-shield giving chance for the attackers to clean the Base. Same with Witches who have other ability's and do not qualify exactly under this scoring method. So in using discernment I am sure these stats will help me, and hopefully you, in better planning of Upgrades and hopefully more effective Attacks.

In researching for this article I have learnt a lot and decided to change my priority list of Unit Upgrades and will implement different combinations of attacking Troops. Good luck to the poor Clashers I'm going to attack, mwhahaha!!!

Good clashing and happy raiding,
see you all on the best Boat in Clash of Clans, RSA Mutineers!!

 your friendly T-Rex Pirate, Dino.

  2. OVCL: Awesome Dino!!! This is so kwl! I attacked with only lvl6 Balloons yesterday, 13 of them destroyed an entire lvl40 base with little air defence.
HOWEVER, I found them slow and stupid :) They all go for the same building, following each other like sheep. And if it was up to only them, and the base was spread all over, they would not finish off the base in time... I had to use rage to speed them up a bit with larges bases. I think it would be great if we can factor in unit speed and maybe intelligence?

I also noticed the Goblin effectiveness, but also read that they have to Damage Per Second Statistics, 1 normal one, and 1 for resources. The resources one being much higher of course :) I think I am going to try an all goblin (lvl5) attack today, and see how that goes.... Maybe just 1 or 2 lightning spells to take out those mortars...

After doing a lot of attacks with Goblins, Archers and Barbarians Yesterday, I found only one weakness... The dreaded lvl 6+ Mortat. Killing grouped together troops quickly :(

This article is really awesome, I can see you put in a lot of work! And I hope to see more comments like this, with each players findings :)

    Regards

  3. Ooo, and one more thing :) even though the Witch is very low on the effectiveness chart, do not forget, she summons skeletons, that are very effective, and as they die, the Witch summons more.

  4. Another thing to consider is attack speed, lets say your damage per seond is 162, but your attack speed is 4 seconds, it means an Air Defence can shoot you 4 times before you shoot once.

As per your request Dino, I am capturing the additional Information in excel, and will publish it soon.

  5. Thank you Ovcl, it did take a bit of time but I am really thankful I did it, changed the way I look at Attacking and Upgrading completely.

You'll notice I edited the entry splitting Effectiveness Per Attack and Effectiveness Per Second. Wanted to highlight the effectiveness per unit and type of attack. You will see now how high the Goblins score on the Per Second stats, totally surprised me!!

And yes the more feedback from everyone the better, experience the best educator.

I tried a full Balloon L4 attack yesterday on a fairly easy base, lets just say it was a disaster, hehehe cost me a fair bit but lesson learnt. Like you say they are slow, and Rage Spell almost essential with them.

I would really like it if we keep on building on this information, so yes please your Excel sheet will be much appreciated.

    Ahoy the D!
